    Location

Tiwi Islands Adventures is located on the Tiwi Islands, a scenic30-minute flight from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. We have exclusively operated here since 1998 and cater for anglers of ALL skill levels, plus small corporate groups, seeking a remote, yet comfortable, professionally guided sport-fishing experience.

Situated 60 km to the north of Darwin, Melville and neighboring Bathurst Island are collectively known as the ‘Tiwi Islands’; the home of the Tiwi people and the home of Tiwi Islands Adventures. Known for its tropical climate, its small and friendly indigenous population, and its exclusive fishing, there is very little infrastructure on the Tiwi Islands, and they are not open to the public for tourism, except on organized trips operated by Tiwi Islands Adventures.

Our remote and remarkable area consists of thousands of square kilometers of eucalypt, paperbark and monsoon vine forest, coastal wetlands, secluded waterfalls, and deserted beaches. An extensive array of the mangrove-lined river and creek systems, sand flats, bays, inlets, and coastal reefs, all abundant with marine life, means the Tiwi Islands are also an unspoiled angler’s paradise.

We operate from two remote yet comfortable locations on the Tiwi Islands; Our Melville Island Lodge headquarters situated on the shores of Snake Bay, plus our ultra-remote Johnson River Camp situated in the picturesque upper reaches of the Johnson River on the east coast of Melville Island.

Access to the Tiwi Islands is via Darwin. From Darwin, you will be transported to the islands by light aircraft, a scenic 30-minute private charter flight.

    Location Species

Barra Barramundi: The Barramundi is an iconic sport fish in Australia and is one of the main targets at Melville. They are found in our surrounding river systems and along the coastline, and our clients love chasing this species no matter how many times they’ve been to Melville.

Toga Saratoga:  Some of the best Saratoga fishing you will ever come across anywhere in Australia. Goose Creek has to be the most densely populated Saratoga Creek on earth…

Golden Snapper: The Golden Snapper is another favourite at Melville being found on the reefs and on the rock bars in the river systems. Sessions on these fish can be hectic, with multiple hook ups and constant action common

Mangrove Jack: Melville has one of the best Mangrove jack fisheries in Australia

GT (Giant Trevally), GT are also been referred to as being the gangsters of Pioneer Bay the largest bay on the island. Fish of over 40KG have been known rome in and depart with a whole fly line and backing.  They have a reputation of turning up in the most unusual places around the island. The biggest GT caught off the beach in front of the lodge is 22KG. The numbers of GT is at times is extraordinary getting through the smaller ones is the issue.

Coral Trout, When it comes time to catching dinner there are few better fish. The coastal/beach reefs around the island hold trout up to 12lb not bad off the beach!!

Spanish Mackeral, The Vincent van Gogh of saltwater fly sports fishing. These are a beautiful looking fish that make you earn your reward. Fast powerful and dirty fighters.

Barracuda,  They come in two sizes up in our parts. Small and annoying and massive followed by a Holly Crap!!

Northern Bluefin Tuna, For those of you that have never seen 400 yards of backing strip off your fly line in 30 seconds, this is the fish for you! Not a lot around in November but that’s good we want you fishing for the fish below.

    Fishing

There’s so much more than just Barramundi fishing at Melville Island. The systems are full of lure and fly crunching Mangrove Jacks, which not only offer exhilarating sport but also look fantastic in photos with those superb canine teeth. In and around Snake Bay, Shark Bay, and the Johnson and Jessie Rivers you’ll also find plenty of Threadfin, Blue Salmon, Fingermark, Tarpon and Estuary Cod. In the internationally acclaimed Goose Creek, you’ll have the opportunity to target trophy sized prehistoric Saratoga. Once you move offshore, the waters are full of Spanish Mackerel, Golden Snapper, GT’s, Long Tail Tuna, Coral Tout and the Barra of the open sea: Black Jewfish.

The guides are hard working, highly experienced and love nothing more than to get their clients onto the fish. They are more than happy to advise and assist when it comes to technique, or if you’d prefer, they’ll just get you to the hotspots and let you do the rest! The equipment and fleet are also second to none, consisting of six custom-built 6.6-meter aluminum boats, fitted with 150hp four stroke motors. The young and regularly updated fleet is routinely serviced and all boats have colour sounders, GPS, satellite phone, 2-way radio, first aid kit, and full safety equipment. In order to maximize client fishing comfort and safety, it is policy to fish with a maximum of 3 anglers per boat – per fishing guide.

    Location Facilities

There are two superb locations on Melville Island: the main fishing lodge on the shores of Snake Bay and the ultra-remote Johnson River Barramundi Camp is situated in the picturesque upper reaches of the Johnson River. The main fishing lodge is purpose built and despite its remote location, it has all of the creature comforts you’ll need to make your stay enjoyable, including hot showers, air-conditioned twin and triple share cabins, fax, and email access. The lounge area offers magnificent 180-degree river and ocean views and this is where you’ll enjoy breakfast and dinner each day with your fellow fisho’s.

    Meals & Drinks

In fact, one of the highlights at Melville Island Lodge is the exceptional meals. Each morning you’ll enjoy a range of hearty breakfast choices that includes bacon and eggs, cereal, toast, juice, and fresh coffee and tea. During the day, your guide will park your boat in a shaded area of the river and prepare your onboard lunch. When you return in the late afternoon after an exhausting day of fishing, there’s nothing better than taking a nice shower and then sit back, beer in hand, to enjoy the cool breezes across the lodge veranda. Dinner is usually served at about 7.30pm and as you’d expect, the sumptuous meals such as beer battered Barramundi and chilled Mangrove Jack are always well received by guests!
