Northern Lights of Albany Island Sports Fishing

Welcome to the Northern Lights of Albany Island Sports Fishing, where adventure and tranquillity meet. Albany Island, located at the tip of Cape York, offers an unparalleled sports fishing experience. The island is steeped in history and, under its new owner, Dave H., is poised to provide both a relaxed, home-like atmosphere and a highly professional guided fishing operation.

    Developing Charters Around Your Desires

We tailor our charters to match your desires and demands. Being closer to the fishing locations than anyone else in the area, we save you up to two hours each day on travel time. While we may be more expensive, we strive to deliver a service and quality of experience that exceeds the dollars spent. We recognise the hard work that goes into earning the money spent on these amazing charters, and we work equally hard to ensure you enjoy every moment.

    Rich History of Albany Island

Albany Island holds a significant place in Australian exploration history. Jackie Jackie (Aboriginal name Galmahra) and Edmund Kennedy were on their way to Port Albany when Kennedy tragically died in Jackie Jackie’s arms, just 20 miles from Albany Island. The ship meant to resupply the exploration party spotted a fire on the island and sent a boat to rescue the sole surviving member, Jackie Jackie. This poignant event is a cornerstone of the island’s storied past.

In December 2023, Albany Island entered a new era with Dave H. as the new owner. Despite its proximity to the mainland—just 800 meters away—Albany Island feels like a world apart. Over 70,000 four-wheel drives cross the Jardine River annually, but none reach Albany Island, preserving its secluded charm.

Light Tackle Sports Fishing for Barramundi

The very tip of Australia is renowned for its Bluewater Fishing and rich cultural history, including industries like beche-de-mer (sea cucumbers) and lobster fishing, as well as a strong pearl history with trochus shell diving. While the Northern Territory and more famous rivers in Cape York often steal the spotlight, the superb barramundi fishing available at the tip of Cape York is frequently overlooked. For a long time, these areas have been underutilised, but we aim to revive the spirit of the early charter sports fishing pioneers like Steve J. and Greg B. by exploring these rivers.

Join us in uncovering those magical spots where you can catch reds and barramundi in the same waters.

A New Era Under Dave H.

Dave H. is committed to maintaining the lodge’s casual home atmosphere while elevating the professional guided fishing operation. The island’s approach to food is a testament to this philosophy. Forget about Tasmanian-farmed salmon or New Zealand lamb. Instead, the meals are locally sourced and crafted to perfection. Expect Atherton Tableland beef with properly butchered cured bacon, locally caught seafood, and even collaborations with local crayfish divers to create the world’s best surf and turf.

    Explore the Rivers and Creeks

Albany Island is ideally positioned amidst over 500 kilometres of rivers, creeks, and drains, including the Escape River, Jackie Jackie Creek, Jardine River, Crystal Creek One and Two, and Doughboy River. These waterways are rich with barramundi, particularly in the 70 cm to 90 cm range, with numerous fish exceeding the legal size. While not famous for giant barramundi, the abundance of sizable fish ensures an exciting and rewarding fishing experience. The big fish are out there—come help us find them!

    Diverse Fishing Opportunities

The waters around Albany Island offer anglers the chance to target a wide variety of fish species:

    • Blue Water Fishing: Target species like Spanish mackerel, trevally, and coral trout in the rich blue waters and reefs.
    • Reef Systems: Fish the extensive reef systems for Red Emperor, nannygai, and other reef dwellers.
    • Coastal Waters: Enjoy coastal fishing for queenfish, barramundi, and threadfin salmon.
    • Brackish and Fresh Water: Head into the creeks and rivers for a mix of saltwater and freshwater species.
    • Billabongs: Access secluded billabongs either by boat or helicopter for an exclusive fishing experience.

    Endless Waters to Explore

With hundreds of kilometers of reef edges and thousands of bommies, the volume of water to fish is staggering. Despite these resources, fishing can be challenging. TV shows and YouTube channels often make it look easy, but those creators put in the effort just like the rest of us. Incredible fish captures require dedication and perseverance.

Often, the fish of a lifetime comes on the penultimate cast or even the very last cast of the day. Imagine the scenario: after five or six days of working hard, that once-in-a-lifetime fish strikes. What if you had put the rod down with 10 minutes to go? Our guides work with you to ensure you can keep fishing all day, every day. You can’t go 1000 miles an hour constantly, but when the effort is needed, they will push you to find that little bit more energy.

    A Unique Sports Fishing Destination

Albany Island is perfectly set in the middle of some of the world’s best sports fishing waters. Most Australians can leave their house in the morning and, after an early start, enjoy a cold drink at the boat shed on Albany Island by the afternoon, rigging up rods for the adventure ahead.

    Creating Your Adventure

Albany Island is all about creating your adventure. Whether you want to fish hard every day or mix it up with some relaxation, the staff are dedicated to helping you achieve your fishing bucket list. The island rewards effort and many dream fish have been caught on the penultimate or last cast of the day.

    Insight Into the Human Condition

The people you are with can make or break an incredible fishing adventure. Shared experiences, camaraderie, and the mutual thrill of the catch are what create lasting memories. We understand that not just one thing makes a great trip; it’s a combination of the location, the guides, and your fellow anglers.

    Beyond the Shiny Objects

Shiny objects don’t necessarily equal happiness. We believe in creating meaningful and fulfilling experiences regardless of budget. If you have a $5,000 budget, we will work to provide you with a $20,000 trip experience without the hefty price tag. It’s about finding that balance and ensuring every dollar spent contributes to an unforgettable adventure.

Whether you’re looking to catch barramundi in the rivers and creeks, target blue water species, or explore the vast reef systems, Albany Island offers a unique and rewarding sports fishing experience. Pack your gear, bring your sense of adventure, and discover the northern lights of sports fishing at Albany Island.
