    The Location Species

GT (Giant Trevally), Giant Trevally has also been referred to as being the gangsters of the flats, they have a reputation for being thugs, bullish and unforgiving. They prey on almost anything that moves. From crabs, lobsters, squid, and eels to Mantis Shrimps. However, their favourite prey will be the wide variety of smaller fish that populate the shallow flats.

Barracuda,  We love fly fishing for Barracuda because you need more than the best barracuda flies, rods, and tackle – you need your wits about you!

Wahoo, Any fish that travels as part of a Wolf Pack is going to be fun on fly…  The wahoo’s speed is incredible – they get up to 76 km/h Wahoo fishing is an incredible experience!

Green Jobfish, One of those fish that hit and go hard! There is no mucking around with a Green Jobfish as before you know it they will have you busted off. Growing up to 1.2m & up to 12KG’s pound for pound they are a sports-fishing superstar! They love similar area as their mates Coral Trout as well as steep edges of coral lumps (bommies) up to 50m in depth.

Coral Trout, Popper fishing for Coral Trout in a couple of feet of water is one of them fishing moments you will never forget. More often than not a Coral Trout is going to come up from depth and smash your popper, lure or jig and start to return home with power and speed. For those fishing with the long wand casting across the top of a reef at low tide with an 8# always have a spare fly line or two if you are fishing remotly as you are going to need them.

Rainbow Runner, This is a new species for me they are also known as Rainbow Yellowtail, Spanish Jack and a Tropical (Hawaiian) Salmon the most amazing thing is that they go as hard as a Dogtooth and they grow up to 46KG. They have also been known to come in close… just think the surprise you could get if you got one of these fishing for trout or other reef species. Hold on and hold on tight.

Blue Fin Trevally, They are one of the pretty fish they look amazing in a photo and given the biggest fish encountered was over 43KG it is a prince amongst sports fish. The Blue Fin does not seem to be on peoples must catch list but for anyone that has caught one they are indeed a superstar. Not a lot of fish are encountered over the 85cm mark. They fight hard not as dirty as a GT and release well once a photo or two has been taken.

Mahi Mahi, There are a lot of fish they jump about when caught but few will spend as much time out of the water at a Mahi Mahi (Dolphin Fish). Visually as spectacular as they come! Much like a Queenfish, they can be a handful when landed.

Red Bass, Those of you that have caught mangrove jacks (wolves of any estuary system) just think of one of them coming in at 12.5kg. They fight to a factor of at least 2.5x so a 10kg is going to feel like a 25kg fish. A fantastic fish to target as they release well and look great in a photo.

Cobia, Growing up we used to catch these on an 80lb handline when fishing for reds. In 200ft of water, you gear a great work out to be sure. Growing up to 78kg (MONSTER) they give you a chance to capture one of the ‘nicest’ fighting fish in the sea. They also love to give away their position by hanging out with Mantarays not all the time but it is a good bet. Makes them good to target on fly!

Dogtooth Tuna, For those of you that have never seen 400 yards of backing strip off your fly line in 30 seconds, this is the fish for you!

Sailfish, You tease the fish in and make a cast… the Sailfish takes your fly and then two seconds later it jumps 100m to your right… DAMMM you think I missed it! But then your guide reminds you of the sound of your line screaming off your reel.

Yellowfin Tuna, Spotting a Yellowfin can be sometimes difficult as they don’t like to play with their food. There will most probably be a boil on the teaser or a splash and your guide will usher you to drop your fly in an elevated tone.

Blue Marlin, Blue marlin are one of the world’s largest bony fish and although adult males seldom exceed 330 pounds (150 kg), females may reach far larger sizes well in excess of 1,000 pounds. A Pacific blue weighing 1,805 pounds was caught in 1970… just think of the line that peeled off that reel!!
