Welcome to Your Private Fishing Paradise: Albany Island

Imagine escaping to your own private tropical island, where the only schedule is the tide chart and the only company is your chosen crew of fellow adventurers. On Albany Island, near the tip of Cape York, this dream becomes your reality. Over the past two years, Dave has poured his heart and soul into restoring Albany Island to its rightful position as a great fishing destination. This isn’t just a trip; it’s an exclusive invitation to disconnect from the noise of the everyday and reconnect with what truly matters: excellent angling and cherished moments with friends. Picture it: Richard, the owner of a large mining engineering company, brought his entire crew here for a well-earned break, and they totally disconnected from the rest of the world, immersed in the thrill of the chase. This is truly an amazing place for escaping the world.

No words or photographs can really describe what it’s like to have a beer with a few mates or family members away from the noise of the world. The constant nature of everything these days makes the opportunity to disconnect like this one of the true pleasures in life. In a location that genuinely has some of the best saltwater fishing on earth, it makes Albany Island is a truly unique location. It ain’t no fishing show that’s for sure, it’s a location where the harder you work (fish), the luckier you get, the more chances you have of landing that fish of a lifetime.

    Disconnecting

Here, amidst natural beauty, you’ll find a place to unwind, share laughter, debate politics, or simply enjoy a few quiet drinks under a sky full of stars. This is a place free from outside influences or the obligation of unwanted conversations that often interrupt our daily lives. Reducing the number of decisions and distractions you encounter each day gives you a unique chance to relax and recharge. The only morning rush at Albany Island is those getting their first cup of coffee.

There isn’t a single wheelie bin in sight. While Telstra 5G is available, we can send an email out to whoever you would like us to, letting them know there’s absolutely no phone or internet reception, ensuring your complete digital detox.

One of the best fishing adventures,

    Giant Trevally fishing action
    Another Giant Trevally fishing action

Prepare for some of the planet’s most exhilarating fishing, and rest assured, all the top-quality fishing gear you’ll need is included in your package. Albany Island boasts some of the best Giant Trevally (GT) fishing on Earth, delivering explosive surface action that seasoned anglers like Joe from Colorado, who recently declared it “some of the best GT fishing I’ve seen anywhere in the world,” rave about. The island is also home to fantastic blue water and flats sports fishing, offering incredible opportunities to target a wide range of species across vast, clear expanses.

Less than 15 km to the south of Albany Island lies the Southern Hemisphere’s largest mangrove system, providing incredible habitat. While nothing on Earth truly compares to certain Northern Territory locations for barramundi fishing, Albany Island doesn’t pretend to be that. Instead, we work hard, strategically targeting estuarine systems and mangrove-lined creeks, and as any good angler knows, the harder you work, the luckier you get. Our barramundi fishing is consistently decent, rewarding effort with memorable catches.

Whether you’re a seasoned sports fisher wielding “the long wand” (or “starvation stick,” as it’s often affectionately called), prefer the thrill of casting lures, poppers, and plastics for pelagic species like Spanish Mackerel or Queenfish, or simply enjoy “bottom bashing” for a feed of delicious reef fish like Coral Trout and Fingermark, our diverse waters cater to all styles and preferences.

    Accommodation:

    Albany Island Accommodation

Your comfort is key after a long day of fishing. Our accommodation features five twin rooms, thoughtfully designed to be configured in any way needed: from a spacious king bed to twin king single beds. The largest room offers even more flexibility, able to be set up as a triple or a double and a single king bed.

Guests enjoy shared facilities, complemented by a large veranda overlooking the stunning Endeavour Strait, the very waters Captain Cook sailed up looking back at Australia. It’s the perfect spot to relax, share stories, and soak in the views.

Your meals from Sea to Paddock

The food experience at Albany Island is a highlight in itself. We believe in maximising local ingredients, sourcing as much as possible directly from Northern Australian paddocks and farms. Our island garden typically contributes something fresh to every meal, ensuring a true “paddock-to-plate” (or “sea-to-plate”!) experience. The emphasis is always on fresh, delicious ingredients cooked well, not overcomplicating it. Imagine feasting on your fresh catch, expertly prepared, alongside vibrant, locally sourced produce. Prepare for delicious, fresh, and wholesome meals that perfectly complement your daily adventures.

The Albany Island “DownLows” Awards Night

To commemorate your unforgettable journey, we’ve established a unique tradition: the Albany Island “DownLows” awards. This fun and engaging event is a playful reversion of the AFL’s prestigious Brownlow Medal count, a concept first conceived and initiated on the island by Gillon McLachlan, then CEO of the AFL, during his visit. At the end of your trip, gather for an entertaining awards night where we celebrate the triumphs, the memorable moments, and perhaps even the “hard luck stories” of your angling escapades in a truly unique Albany Island style.
