Coral Sea Fishing: Sport Fishing Adventures at Australia’s Most Remote Reefs
The Coral Sea is home to some of the most remote and rarely fished seamounts on earth. Far beyond the continental shelf, pristine reefs, crystal clear water and massive drop-offs combine to create a genuine sports fisherman’s trip of a lifetime.
For anglers chasing world-class sport fishing in untouched waters, Coral Sea fishing destinations such as Cato Reef, Wreck Reef, Kenn Reef and Fredericks Reef offer some of the best remote reef fishing left in the world.
Remote Coral Sea Reefs
Cato Reef, Wreck Reef, Kenn Reef and Fredericks Reef sit hundreds of kilometres offshore in the Coral Sea, well away from any commercial or recreational fishing pressure. Each reef system features deep water drop-offs, sheltered lagoons and healthy coral gardens that are rarely, if ever, fished. The result is world-class sport fishing in some of the most untouched marine environments in Australian waters.
World Class Sport and Reef Fishing
The sea life around these Coral Sea reefs has to be seen to be believed. Anglers can target almost every species of sport and reef fish imaginable, including:
- Massive Dogtooth Tuna
- Yellow Fin Tuna
- Giant Trevally (GT)
- Wahoo
- Coral Trout
- Jobfish
Whether trolling deep water off the reef edge, popping the drop offs or working the lagoon, the Coral Sea offers an unmatched variety of sport fishing in a single trip.
Catch and Release Sport Fishing
Coral Sea fishing trips are run on a catch and release basis, protecting these fragile and remote reef systems for future generations while still giving anglers the chance to land, photograph and release some truly epic fish.
Untouched Islands and Coral Lagoons
Beyond the fishing, the islands and lagoons of the Coral Sea offer a rare opportunity to experience nature at its best. Thousands of nesting sea birds, pure white coral sand beaches and a completely untouched natural environment make these reefs as memorable for their scenery as their fishing. These are among the only places in Australia where an angler can land a Giant Trevally straight from the beach.
Land Based Coral Sea Fishing at Albany Island (November and Early December)
For anglers who prefer a land-based fishing experience, we offer a Coral Sea adventure based out of Albany Island, at the northern tip of Cape York where the Coral Sea meets the Torres Strait, available in November and early December.
Albany Island offers comfortable land-based accommodation with all meals included, putting anglers within easy reach of some of the richest inshore, reef and bluewater fishing grounds in Far North Queensland. Species on offer include Giant Trevally, Spanish Mackerel, Queenfish, Golden Trevally, Tuskfish, Coral Trout, Fingermark and Barramundi, with Dogtooth Tuna available as a weather-dependent specialty target.
Guests typically fly into Horn Island or Bamaga before transferring to Albany Island, making it an accessible option for anglers seeking serious Coral Sea sport fishing without the extended time at sea required to reach the outer Coral Sea reefs.
