Flies and Fly Gear Guide

Ningaloo and Exmouth Gulf Gear Guide

Fly Suppliers & Discount

Quality flies can be purchased from several excellent suppliers. When ordering, please inform the company of your fishing trip date to ensure timely delivery. Many international visitors have their flies delivered directly to us.

Fly Recommendations by Species

Bonefish

Our bonefish are typically found in 1-2 meters of water, so heavy flies that get to the bottom quickly are essential. We target large fish, so 1/0 hooks are recommended.

  • McVays Gotcha 1/0 with 3/16 I-Balz or similar weighted eyes.
  • Avalon shrimps 1/0 with 3/16 I-Balz or similar weighted eyes.
  • Chartreuse/white and white clousers 1/0 with 3/16 I-Balz or similar weighted eyes.

Permit

A variety of crab and shrimp patterns are effective for Permit.

  • Wolf’s Exmouth Crab (from untamedfliesandtackle.com.au and nervouswater.com.au)
  • Tan and yellow Alphlexo crabs on 1/0, #1, or #2 hooks.
  • White Alphlexo crabs on 1/0, #1, or #2 hooks.
  • Avalon shrimps 1/0 with 3/16 I-Balz.
  • Any good crab or epoxy shrimp patterns on 1/0 or #2 hooks.

Giant Trevally (GT)

Big, durable flies on strong hooks are a must for these powerful predators.

  • Brush flies in black, black/purple, or tan (6/0 to 8/0).
  • Openshaws ghost (4/0 to 8/0).
  • Mullet and Garfish imitations (4/0 to 8/0).

Rods, Leaders & Other Gear

Rods & Lines

  • 10wt (General Purpose): The best all-arounder. Pair with Scientific Angler Sonar Sink 30 Clear (350gr) or Cortland Compact (350gr), available from nervouswater.com.au. A floating line is useful for barramundi or poppers.
  • 12wt (GT): For targeting GTs. Use a floating or intermediate line like the Cortland GT/Tuna Tropic Plus or Rio Leviathan Intermediate (75lb core).
  • 14wt+ (Marlin): For a serious shot at marlin.

Leaders

No need for expensive tapered leaders!

  • Fluorocarbon spools: 20lb and 30lb
  • Nylon spools: 50lb and 100lb

Spin Tackle

  • General: 20-30lb braid outfit on a 6-7 foot rod.
  • For GT: 80-120lb braid outfit on a strong rod capable of long casts.

Personal Gear Checklist

  • Hat & Polaroid Sunglasses
  • Lens cleaning cloth/spray
  • Sunscreen
