Fishing Cassowary Coast

FishingEarth 0447 789 777

Between the cities of Cairns and Townsville lies the Cassowary Coast, stretching over 200 kilometres from Babinda down to Cardwell. The region is bordered by the Great Barrier Reef to the east and the World Heritage Wet Tropics Rainforest to the west and encompasses offshore islands, golden sandy beaches, cool mountain streams, waterfalls and mangrove everglades. The fauna is wide and varied with crocodiles, cassowaries, butterflies, birdlife and all the tropical sports fish you can think of.

It does not matter if you are looking for a local day charter, weekend getaway or a deluxe Fishing Lodge or Mother-ship fishing adventure FishingEarth can look after you.

Beautiful Fishing

The team at FishingEarth have fished six of the seven continents and many of the beautiful oceans & seas surrounding these amazing land masses. And the number one lesson we have collectively learned from these many 1000’s of hours fishing is that often it is the people you are will that takes your fishing adventure from a good trip to a FishingEarth Fishing Adventure of a lifetime.

We want to match you with a location where you can relax so the ‘old world’ seems like a million miles away. And the only thing you need to worry about is… well we hope nothing to worry about apart from how are you going to turn that fish of a lifetime that has just smashed your lure or fly!!

As FishingEarth does not have to ‘just fill’ seats on boats no matter what the fishing conditions we pride ourselves on giving you an honest assessment of the tides and conditions. Most of us have limited windows to get your fishing adventure fix so we work on making it as stress free as possible and find you the best adventure for the dates you have available.

FishingEarth also understand that it’s not just about catching fish… Yes we understand it is a Fishing Adventure so the fishing opportunities have to be world class as do the guides and the equipment. We also want to make sure we give you the best options to be at the right lodge at the best times possible. The team at FishingEarth would like to welcome you to your FishingEarth Cassowary Coast fishing  Adventure of a lifetime. It does not matter if you are looking for a local day charter, weekend getaway or a deluxe Fishing Lodge or Mother-ship fishing adventure FishingEarth can look after you.

Great Fishing

Fishing alone in tropical North Queensland makes it a top destination for any angler

The Cassowary Coast takes its name from the mighty flightless rainforest bird, the Cassowary. This beautiful and powerful bird is a truly amazing sight, with a large hump on its head and large feet that are tipped with long and dangerous claws. Despite their size, they are somewhat elusive and even when they are spotted, they only need take two steps into the rainforest before disappearing completely from view.

Along the Cassowary Coast you will fall in love with all the beachside communities such as Kurrimine Beach, Bramston Beach, Mission Beach and Etty Bay, as well as small towns such as Babinda, Innisfail and Tully. There are a number of other beautiful towns and coastal communities that offer a welcoming respite for the travelling fisher, their friends and family.

Being one of the greenest areas in Australia, there are more fresh water mountain streams filled with Sooty Grunter and Jungle Perch and rivers filled with Red Bream, Sooties and Barramundi here than any other place in world. At many of these streams it would be considered a busy year for fishing if more than five people had dropped a line! And even though the major rivers and creeks are fished more often, the fishing is still very light.

Hinchinbrook Island lies off the Cardwell coast, halfway between Cairns and Townsville with either location being the perfect starting point for your assault on the fishing Mecca that is Hinchinbrook. The rainforest-clad island is surrounded by a maze of mangrove-lined creeks and channels, all of which present a spectacular sight from the mainland.

The Hinchinbrook Channel has become one of the best fishing locations on the east coast of Australia over the past decade. Not only does the area offer sheltered waterways away from the winds, but it also offers arguably some of the most diverse fishing in Australia.

There are Permit to be hunted on the flats, GT’s cruising around the drop offs waiting to smash your popper, Mangrove Jacks and Barramundi waiting to ambush baitfish and your lure and fly in the snags and along the rocky outcrops and lurking in the deep holes you will find Fingermark and Jewfish.

When it comes to fly fishing, every angler in the universe would have read about the fighting qualities of the ‘Prince of the Flats’ – the Permit.  Not only do they go off like a freight train, but they are cunning and will pass over your crab imitation more times than you will care to remember! But this frustration makes for a magical moment when you eventually feel a weight on your line. And as the line screams off the reel and you spring into action, any feeling of frustration is gone in an instant as you contemplate when to set the hook on your stampeding Permit.

As well as the top notch fishing, Hinchinbrook Channel is also home to many marine animals, including the dugongs, crocodiles and turtles. This, combined with the magnificent coral formations, makes Hinchinbrook Island a great fishing location.

Mission beach & Dunk Island   Mission Beach is a natural mid way point between Townsville and Cairns and is made up of four beach villages linked by 14 miles of wide golden beach, a perfect base to relax and explore this unspoilt natural environment. A blend of sophisticated eateries, boutiques, a tropical fruit winery and art galleries nestle against lush tropical rainforest. Mission Beach reminds us of how beautiful little beachside towns can be, blending vibrant art and culture with unique tourism attractions.

South Mission Beach has glorious views across to Dunk Island, Bedarra, and that’s the important location for the light game fishing. Both Dunk Island and Bedarra are perfect locations to base yourself, friends or family as you enjoy some of the best light tackle sportsfishing Australia has to offer.

While you are off fishing the non angler/s in your group will be enjoying golf, kayaking, cassowary spotting, rainforest hikes, jet skiing, crocodile spotting, bird watching, market shopping, bike riding, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. Or just sit around and read a book or two and watch the local wildlife go about its business. Or you can reward you’re non fishing partner by booking a treatment at the Spa of Peace and Plenty, where they will be immersed in decadent therapies to relax and revitalise.

Rivers such as the South Johnston and the Tully are amongst the best fishing rivers in Australia. And fishing beach spots such as Kurrimine and Mission Beach combine a range of fishing opportunities from Whiting through to Mackerel. All this within the stunning environment that is the Cassowary Coast, which both you and the family will enjoy.

From here it only takes 45 minutes to reach the Great Barrier Reef, meaning you can be hooked onto a Coral Trout or two in no time at all. Rather than speeding straight out to the reef though, many charter operators and guides like to stop off at a few secret spots on the way out. These spots are great to get you in the swing of things and might include anything from jigging for GT’s and Reef Jacks to trawling up a 50lbs Mackerel.

Unlike most fishing destinations in the world there is almost always a fishing option no matter what the weather along the Cassowary Coast. If the ‘Wind Gods’ are not on your side and it’s blowing its proverbial off out on the reef there are a number of sheltered islands and rivers to fish. If it’s a bit wet, don’t let it bother you as it’s always warm up here and a good rain coat will have you fishing in comfort. Plus a good downpour can really get the fish biting in the rivers and estuaries.

If it’s reef fishing you’re after then reefs such as Pearl, Feather and Hall Thompson are all great options and not that far from the coast. These reef systems offer reef fishing that is as good as any that you’ll find off the coast of North Queensland. Here the reefs abound with Coral Trout, Spangled Emperor and pelagics such as Spanish Mackerel and Tuna. What could be better than cruising out to the reef and watching the sunrise over the ocean?

But it’s not just the fishing options along the Cassowary Coast that will blow you away. If you are looking for a great place to eat, there are gourmet restaurants and pubs that serve great Australian seafood and steaks that melt in your mouth. The beer is always cold and the person serving you your drink or meal will always be happy to see you. If you’re just passing through and don’t have time to stop, then swing by into one of the old fashioned hamburger joints where they make them just like they were in the old days!

If you can tear yourself away from the all of the great fishing for a few hours, or even a day or two, there are some amazing places to visit along the coast. Mission Beach is probably the most famous beach along the Cassowary Coast, with golden beaches extending in either direction as far as the eye can see. As you stroll along or relax under the shade of a palm tree you can look out over the glorious Coral Sea and Dunk Island. Mission Beach also has a number of beautiful stores that sell local art works and produce.

At Mena Creek you will find Paronella Park, a beautiful Spanish Castle built in the 1930s on the edge of Mena creek. There are also several great locations, such as the Boulders and Josephine Falls, where you can pull over and stop for a cooling swim. You could even take along a picnic to enjoy alongside the waters edge.

So why not escape the hustle and bustle of your world for some magical fishing in the greenest region of the tropical north. The locals are laid back and friendly and the fishing is frantic and amazing. Your fish species tally will rocket up when fishing this area.

In between your fishing trips you can visit lush tropical rainforests, explore the Great Barrier Reef, relax on sun drenched beaches, or have some quiet time in the shade of one of the spectacular rainforest trees in the area. The hardest thing you have to do in the Cassowary Coast is pack your bags when it’s time to leave!
