Papua New Guinea is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It encompasses the eastern half of New Guinea, the world’s second largest island; the Bismarck Archipelago (New Britain, New Ireland, the Admiralty Islands, and several others); Bougainville and Buka (part of the Solomon Islands chain); and small offshore islands and atolls. The national capital, Port Moresby, is located in southeastern New Guinea on the Coral Sea.
Due to its tropical location, the country offers 2 main fishing seasons; the Wet and the Dry. Avoiding the South-Easterly winds during the Wet season (December – May), we head out to sea targeting our beloved Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna, and other reef and pelagic species. During the Dry season (June – November), when the rivers are at their lowest levels, we head into the most remote river spots to target the PNG Black Bass and Barramundi. Having 2 main seasons, we are lucky to be able to fish year-round.

At 616-square kilometers, it is the land mass equivalent of Singapore. The lake’s attractive pumice sand beaches give it the appearance of an inland ocean and it offers excellent all year round scenic lake cruises and fishing experiences. Most fishing on the lake takes the form of trolling using either lures or flies, with the catch averaging around four pounds.
Whether you are an experienced fly fisherman or a complete novice, you will find fly fishing both a delight and a challenge. The Taupo region has some of the best fly fishing rivers in the world and is also New Zealand’s most popular trout fishing location. The Waitahanui, Hinemaiaia and Tongariro rivers are great attractions for keen fishermen the world over. Amongst the exquisite scenery of this lush region, anglers of any skill will enjoy this experience.
Anglers come to the local rivers to fish for spawning trout, which run up the rivers from Lake Taupo during the colder winter months. Both Rainbow and Brown trout frequent these waters and disappointments are rare.
Your fishing guide will collect you from Huka Lodge in a four-wheel drive vehicle and return you again after your excursion. Guides provide top quality rods, reels, waders, and flies.

As a chef, I’ve always had two ambitions for my career. The first was to cook to the highest level of Michelin Stars and I’ve now done this at three of Europe’s great restaurants. The second has been to work at a leading lodge, where I can create the sort of environment where guests feel welcome and at home, almost as if they were in my own kitchen. For this reason, working with Huka Lodge is a dream come true for me.
