Mangrove Jack

FishingEarth 0447 789 777

If Killer Whales are the wolves of the sea then Mangrove Jacks are the attack dogs of the Northern waters of Australia.

You are never left wondering with Mangrove Jacks if you got one because when a Jack hits, it will be all over in a few seconds so there is no time for grabbing the camera! When the Jacks are on the bite you have to be ready. Drag needs to be tight as they hit and turn straight back into the snag and you can kiss your lure or fly goodbye.

It does not matter if you are looking for a local day charter, weekend getaway or a deluxe Fishing Lodge or Mother-ship fishing adventure FishingEarth can look after you

A mangrove Jack Hits like a freight train and don’t want to stop

Those who are familiar with fishing in open waters, where the fish do not have any cover to dive into after being hooked – You will find Mangrove Jack fishing exciting as it can be non-stop action. Hopefully its not just re-rigging rods because of the Jacks winning battle after battle, although your guide will be looking after the re-rigging for you if you wish. If the Jacks have been particularly furious to your gear, the “replace if lost lure policy” can add up so if you see a pen on the boat try and hide it. Better to leave a few bucks as a tip. We all get excited about the run off at the beginning of each year for Barramundi, but this is also one of the best times to target Mangrove Jacks. They should never be forgotten as a fish to target even when the Barramundi are biting. They too like Barra feed best on the turn of the tides and make a welcome change. We encourage catch and release but there is nothing wrong with keeping a few fish for dinner and a baked Mangrove Jack with an ice cold beer or wine will always get 10 out of 10.

Mangrove Jacks are superstars

As mentioned Mangrove do not like wondering around in open water they LOVE rockbars and any sort of timber structure. Those of you that ever get to see a Jack in a fish tank, you will see that they always stay in cover, apart from when they are feeding then they will go straight back into the timber after they have smashed their dinner.

Now these guys can grow up over the 35lbs mark but these monsters are only found out on the reef often in very deep water up to 100 meters, living in a wreck. This is a good thing as if there were fish of this size in the estuary’s or rivers off northern Australia, we would need to buy shares in lure companies, as every Jack attack would result in one less lure in your or your guides tackle box.

There would not be many lure fishos that have landed a Jack from a snag over the 15lbs mark. But they do not have to be that big to be a lot of fun and to test your skills. One of the best times to have a go at a Jack is after a heavy rainstorm. The added fresh water seems to turn them on and fish up to the 50cm mark can be caught in estuaries as well as a long way up rivers and creeks. That new fresh water gets all the little bait fish moving and the fish on the bite.

In fact one of the biggest Jacks I have seen caught not out of the reef was 20km up a river in Far North Queensland and it was a nice 65cm monster. It was in fact bigger than the Barramundi we were catching and it hit the lure around 10 minutes after a huge tropical storm.

What a fish Mangrove Jack

Now this is the thing about how they feed and why they are such strong fighters and often win the battle with the fisho. They see your lure (and this is why getting very close to the structure they are in) they will see your lure and move out of the snag and move away from what you are offering. When they decide that it’s time for dinner they will turn and charge back at your lure heading towards their snag at a million miles an hour. So they are at full speed when they hit your lure and they are on the way back home and do not see why you should stop them! Remember tight drags, unless you want to donate your lure to the lure ‘gods’. Once caught they can be a range of colours from dark red through to a beautiful golden brown, but this colour does darken the longer you have them out of the water. One thing to remember is that they have some serious teeth and there have been many anglers with more of a memento than a picture over the years. Get your picture and get them back in the water as soon as you can.

Here at FishingEarth we believe that catching the fish is only a part of the enjoyment. Yes, and we know that the moment that you hook a fish is one of the best feelings in life. So let us know what you want to do and where you want to go what you want to catch. We will create a once of a lifetime fishing adventure for you.
